Welcome to the new Spanish Goat Association. We are proud to represent the most efficient and hardy goat in the United States of America.
The Spanish goats in the United States are tried-and-true, which is why they're so popular in the south and southwestthis breed can handle almost any hot climate and rugged terrain. Strong, fertile, and parasite-resistant, this is the kind of goat that big ranchers dream about.
Spanish goats are a pure breed, but are also known as "brush goats," "scrub goats," and "woods goats." Many have been crossbred, and the variety of strains make identification a little tricky. But there are fullbloods/purebreds out there. We'd like to keep it that way.
The Spanish Goat Association is trying to preserve the true Spanish goat gene pool that has made Spanish goats so great. We're here to help preserve this heritage breed, and can only achieve this goal with the participation of dedicated breeders.
Please contact us if you have Spanish goats, or if you want Spanish goats. If your neighbors have Spanish goats, we need to hear from them, too. Don't worry if your Spanish goats are mixed breeds or look different from the photos you've seenwe're interested in what you have.
The Spanish Goat Association seeks to preserve the Spanish goat gene pool by increasing the availability of Spanish goats and by educating goat breeders of the benefits of raising Spanish goats. We also provide a forum for contact with Spanish goat breeders.
This Association was started in August 2007 in response to the work of Justin Pitts and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. We are enjoying the involvement of Spanish goat breeders in a team effort to preserve this excellent breed.
Note: A recent magazine article listed Justin Pitts as the primary contact for this Association. He's pretty busy in the hands-on management of his heritage-breeds farm, so it's best to call Leslie at 5406878871 for questions, or e-mail us at postmaster@spanishgoats.org.
Are you new to all of this? If so, please visit our Beginner Page for a few tips to help you get started. Yes, you can raise Spanish goats, and Yes, we're here to help.
